Who will do the assessment?
Usually the therapist that you usually work with completes the assessment as they know you or your child best. However sometimes we need to refer to other therapists (expert in a specific area) if we feel we may be able to achieve a more comprehensive analysis. The assessment we do is usually part of a multidisciplinary assessment process that may involve your Paediatrician or other specialists. We can help guide you in this process and are more than happy to liaise with your or your child’s treatment team.
How long does it take?
Assessment can vary in length depending on the type of assessment being used and the reason for completing the assessment. These can take more than one session depending on how well the participant performs and their ability to focus. After the assessment is complete a comprehensive report is usually written detailing key findings and areas of focus for the treatment program. Often these reports will need to be used for or assist you to access funding. Therefore, it is imperative that the clinician covers everything. Once the clinician has written the report and collated their findings, they will meet with you to discuss the results and the proposed next steps in the process.
In short this can depend on availability and the capability of the participant to participate.
Can I request an assessment for my child?
Of course, you can. Our Fired-Up Therapists are experienced in working with you to determine why you believe an assessment is required. Most assessments can only be completed yearly and some have age level requirements so their years of experience and knowledge will help guide the process and the necessity to recommend when is the best time to assess, what type of assessment or whether an assessment is necessary at all.
What assessments do you do?
The Fired-Up team can assess for a variety of things including, but not limited to:
- Academic performance
- Cognition (IQ)
- Handwriting and motor skills
- Language, speech
- School Support
- Social skills
We utilise the most current assessment tools and technology to maximise the quality and qualification of the results.
Do you assess for autism?
The Fired-Up team use the gold standard of Autism assessments including, but not limited to:
- ADOS-2 (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule – 2nd Edition)
- ADI-R (Autism Diagnostic Interview – Revised)
These assessments are usually combined and conducted to complete a detailed and thorough investigation to assist your Paediatrician in the process of diagnosis.
These assessments can take up to 4-hours of contact time in total (3 hours with parents, 1 hour with your child) and usually involve observation in session, or the clinic at home, school or kinder. Again, a comprehensive report can then be drafted and a thorough discussion with you regarding outcomes and next steps completed.
How can I book an assessment?
If you are already seeing a Fired-Up Team member your first step should be to speak with them about your reason for wanting to obtain an assessment. They will help you to plan the process and can guide you regarding deadlines where applicable.
If you are not currently working with the Fired-Up Team and are looking for a OT or Speechie to conduct an assessment please contact our friendly admin team and they will be able to book a time to meet one of our friendly team and plan the process.
